Ok, I just purchased Makita LXT407 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 4-Piece Combo Kit & am going to send in for the bare tool rebate where I'm choosing the circular saw. You Can't go wrong with that at all point blank. I've seen the same kit in home depot for close to $500 after taxes. I've used the flashlight, hammer drill & impact driver but not extensively. I have to say they all perform great. I know carpenters who use these drills on a daily basis & have nothing bad to say about the product & love them. For over 5 years I used 1 of the older models of Makita's cordless drills on a daily basis & that thing rocked, it never let me down. Aside from that I've used their corded tools too be it drills or any type of saw (circular, miter, Jig & reciprocating). I know they make reliable products. What helped me make my final decision was a mixture of the carpenters who use these new LXT Li-Ion drills everyday & my own personal experience. The tools feel great & the drills are light & powerful, especially that mini-me impact driver. As for the reciprocating saw its a cordless, so I don't expect to be doing extra heavy duty stuff with it due to battery life. Except it makes one think from what from what I've researched. I've read on people cutting down tree's with the same model I now own. So I may just be doing heavier work with it than I anticipated. After I have used these tools a lot more than I have, in the next few months I will leave a more in depth review.

I realize this product has been out for a few years now. So I can understand when It was brand new on the market the tools may have had some bugs. As do most products when they are 1st released. Its now 2010, that being said, I've seen some of the same negative reviews I read here on amazon, on other sites. I mean I seen the same exact 1's word for word. All & all the positive reviews outnumber the negative one's & from my own personal experience with Makita products I'm confident with what I have purchased.

Simply put... They work GREAT!!

Being that I've never owned any cordless tools before, except a cordless screw-driver.... I'm comparing them to my "corded tools".... and again, did I mention they WORK GREAT??

I really like them, particularly the "Sawzall"... which I've owned a Milwaukee for years. IT WAS GREAT, when I finished my tree-trimming job! No cord 30-feet up in the tree, just as heavy-duty... cut like butter. I even went to town on cutting up all the limbs before they went into the fire-pit.... it was, dare I say.... FUN!! (no honey... I didn't say fun... I said, I won!)

I used the drill & driver to do a boat-load with my KREG pocket hole jig.... did the whole table. with-out re-charging! I'm thinking about running the LIGHT on a full charge... just to see how long it will last.... but, it will probably be a while??

I was originally looking at buying the "COMPACT" version of these tools.... glad I didn't!! Not that they wouldn't be worth it... just that I feel like I got some AWESOME VALUE with these instead!!

I did a bunch of research on which set I wanted to get, so I made a VERY EDUCATED decision with this set... and I'm really happy with them so far (about 30 days)!! PLUS, I get an extra tool as a Rebate.... that was the clincher for me!!

Anyway.... Happy Drilling & Screwing... you'll totally love 'em!!

I've owned my set for over 6 years and have gotten more than my money's worth from the set. The number of times I've had to start my pilot hole and then set the screw goes on and on. With this, it's so simple to start my hole, flip the bit and set the screw. After 6 years, one of the bits stopped snapping back into place cleanly. However, there are 3 other bits in the set and I switched to one of the 3 remaining and things are fine.

The only negative that I've had with this is that it extends the length of the drill out about another 2 to 3 inches. When I'm doing tight work in cabinets, it gets a bit challenging to use. Other than that, it's the only bit I always keep with my drill.

"Good combo, not perfect though" 2010-04-12

I've used this combo now for a couple of weeks, repairing a small aluminum airplane. I've used the drill mostly, the driver only a couple of times. It replaces a 10-year old 9.6v DeWalt drill.

The Makita is a good but not perfect drill. A few small gripes:

1. The 1.5amp-hour Li-Ion battery lasts for maybe 30 mins of use. So, if you're actively using it, you'll be swapping/recharging batteries throughout the day. Since it does recharge in 15 mins that not a problem for me, but maybe someday I'll get the 3.0 amp-hour battery.

2. Working upside down under the airplane wing, the cooling air blows through it at just the right angle to blow in your face along with aluminum cutting chips, unless you swivel the body to a slightly awkward angle. Yeah, that's an unusual use, but that's what I used it for these couple of weeks.

3. The LED light is a nice idea, but unfortunately the drill chuck casts a shadow on the drill point. Oh well.

4. I wish the driver had a clutch or some way reducing its tightening force...I don't want to torque much with an Al aircraft. But it will be handy for removing screws and bolts.

Nevertheless I heartily recommend this drill and combo if you need both. It's a good value for the money. I got this over its competitors because I wanted the fast recharge. Hope the batteries last!

Well constructed, with excellent balance, power, and weight. The impact drive is especially powerful, and would highly recommend getting the combo, as the extra cost is totally worth it. The only complaint I have is that the trigger distance between slow and full speed is very small. This isn't too big of a problem because of the speed selector (on the drill), but I takes a little getting used to after using a NiCd for many years. The case is well designed and compact, and while perhaps not as durable/protective as hard plastic, it stores both drills snuggly, along with charger, and room for a few drill bits. I can't speak for their drills, but my Milwaukee router and circular saw came in massive, unwieldy cases, so having a soft sided, compact case (that could also double as one manly lunchbox) is nice.

I was worried that my 1.5aH battery would not fit or even if it did it wouldn't power the blower. I was also worried that even at full power that something this small wouldn't be up to the job - mainly blowing out my garage and cleaning the grass of my sidewalk.

The Answers -

- While the 1.5aH battery is not optimal (although I do have two from my Makita LCT300W 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-Piece Combo Kit set), but it does work well enough. The main issue is that the battery life is about 3-5 minutes on the blower's highest setting. However, 4 minutes will blow a lot of grass off of your sidewalks).

- Plenty of power - IF you are blowing on smooth surfaces. If you are planning to use this to blow your leaves into a giant pile you will be disappointed.

- Ultra light - less than 5lbs

- Pull-the-trigger easy - this is what really attracted me to the Makita LXT Blower since about 75% of my clean-up jobs are simple and do not require my gas powered blower. It is great to have the option to grab a light-weight blower and have the job done within a couple of minutes.

- The Makita blower can be converted into a vacuum - but the attachment is NOT included. I was puzzled for a few minutes as I looked for the dust collecting attachment. This is my only complaint, why didn't Makita just include the dust collector?

Final Verdict - I really couldn't be happier. I may eventually buy a Makita BL1830 18v (3.0ah) Lithium-Ion Battery but until then I will be perfectly happy with my current set-up.

I was surprised at how small this was. And it really isn't that powerful. And, yes, I do have the power turned all the way up. It's good for blowing grass and small leaves, but I don't think it's suitable for heavy duty or even moderate use. Not for piles of grass or leaves.

This is actually my second compact Makita cordless blower. I had the 14 volt pod style battery model. I also had the cordless drill and work light in the same series. I liked that blower so much, I replaced everything when the new 18 volt LXI lithium-ion series model came out just based on the new blower. Obviously the 14 volt was a good unit, this 18 volt LXI model is like that one on steroids. Don't let the compact size fool you, in fact the BUB182Z almost looks like a toy, this blower puts out a lot of air at excellent velocity. Now, it is not going to work well with heavy wet leaves or stones, but for dirt, dust, dead buds, dry leaves and things along those lines it is perfect. This is all you need to blow out your garage floor or clean off a porch. It is SO convenient not to have to mess with extension cords or gasoline/oil mixes. My favorite use for it, however, is to dry of my cars after washing them. I'm a bit of a fanatic about my cars and how I take care of them. Because of that I'm always concerned about swirls and scratches. This blower can easily dry two cars off one battery charge. Not only can it remove water from the large sheet metal areas, but it is perfect to get at the water you usually can't get at with a microfiber waffle weave drying towel...exterior rear view mirrors, around headlights, door handles, window moldings, gas doors, emblems and similar areas. Before these tools, after I hand dried a car, I'd move it back into the garage or open and shut a door and I would get little streaks of water running down from the places I just mentioned and I'd have to grab a towel and redry those parts of the car again to avoid water spotting. If use this blower, 95% of that is eliminated. You can also easily remove the water from the wheels and tires, so you have much less water running off onto the garage floor.

I really love this tool and recommend it without hesitation. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. It is also a great value. Once you get the charger and batteries (a bit pricey), picking to this tool or the other LXI series tools is really quite reasonable.

I was way too close to chucking my entire 1998 Makita drill, charger, and two dead batteries, even though the drill worked as good as ever.

Buying this one replacement battery, even for $44 dollars, feels much more responsible. It appears to be equal to the original in every way, even says 'Made in Japan'. I've decided I don't really need two. Amazon's price was among the lowest, but to their advantage, they do not have to take the old batteries back for recycling.

Recently, just when my sons were beginning a project during which my Makita would be used extensively, one of the old batteries died. Good old Makita! My only real criticism of this package is the LED light on the drill. It's sort of marginally useful due to its location and casts a very annoying "V" shaped shadow upward from the bit. However, this still beats the hell out of my 1995-vintage 9.6v Makita drill that has no light. Also, the included old-school incandescent work light casts a weak, yellowish light and is of little value in my opinion and I've never used it, but some folks might like it I suppose. Other than that the whole kit is great.

I got this charger to replace a similar (though, not identical) Makita charger. I never knew a charger could simply stop working -- but, mine did. The old charger appeared to be working, but the batteries were not really being charged. The green light would come on, supposedly indicating that the battery was fully charged. If I removed the battery from the charger and replaced it in the charger immediately, the charging light would return to red (indicating that the battery still required charging.) At first, I thought the batteries were "bad". So, I disposed of them and got new batteries. But, new batteries also would not charge. (I even returned new batteries, thinking they were defective.) So, I decided the problem might be the charger. And, yes, it was the charger. It did not "go bad" all of a sudden. It apparently "went bad" gradually. I had no idea that the charger could stop working. It was not dropped or banged around, etc. There was no obvious event that occurred to make the charger stop working. So, Lesson Learned. Chargers apparently can simply stop working.

I'm extremely disappointed with the item and the service. I had ordered 2 batteries and in receiving them I had only received one (the shipping invoice read "2" shipped)and had to ask for the second one. The email address on the invoice is incorrect (I figured out the mistake on my own when writing an email about being short shipped one battery-which they did respond to). The batteries are labeled the same as the ones I currently have (and needed to replace) but my charger is not "reading" them once I place them in it. There is no phone contact number to speak with anyone in asking for assistance. I have contacted (emailed) them on two additional occassions without any response back. They STILL haven't responded. I have asked for help with charging of the batteries, asked for a phone number to speak with someone, and gave them my phone number to have someone call me. Upon no response to my outreach I have finally emailed one last time for an RA number to return. Time has now lapsed past the noted return date on the invoice and I feel suspicious that they did this to avoid taking them back. Overall sketchy deal.

I have had my Makita 9.6v drill since 1992 (17 years!) and this is the third pair of batteries I have purchased. The second set still work but are getting weak so I purchased another pair. I have used my drill hard and I love these batteries. I once stripped the paint off a 12' aluminum boat using a 3" wire wheel in the drill and rotated between the two batteries for 15 hours straight (use one, charge the other, repeat) until all the 20 year old enamel paint was gone. I use this light quite often, the fluorescent light is bright and really lights up the place. I have 2 complaints:

* The incandescent flashlight bulbs burn out very quickly. I've replaced them several times, and I have been careful to get the correct bulbs in the Makita packaging. They just must get too hot in the lens and burn out. I've given up on that side, use a regular Maglite if I need a beam.

* They are very fussy about the battery charge. Once the battery even starts to go below full charge, the light shuts off. Not gets dim, it just shuts off with no warning. Pretty annoying when you're under a sink or in otherwise tight quarters and suddenly in the dark.

I'm still glad I bought it, but you should be aware of these issues.

I have just about every tool in the Makita LXT line. The flashlight is good but not up to the same standards as the rest of the excellent LXT line up. The fluorescent part works great - bright and runs for a long time on a battery charge. I am very happy with the performance of the fluorescent portion. The flashlight is virtually useless. It's about as bright as an old 6 volt lantern. You should consider this part of it non-existent. I also had problems with my first one - it would on it's own start randomly looping through the lights - fluorescent on, fluorescent off, flashlight on, flashlight off. I had to pay to send it back to Makita but they fixed it under warranty. I have had no issues with it since.

"great driver, drill lacks some guts" 2010-03-31

This driver drill combo has served me well. A few small downsides. First I have found the drill lacks some power when boring larger holes. During my last attempt at large hole drilling I actually smelt some burning odors from the drill. I don't normally use my cordless for hole sawing but sometimes it's a matter of convenience and speed, use what's in hand. The driver is a beast. I've had no problems and it has been a great tool. Never owned an impact before, great addition. I've had these for about 8 months now, no battery problems. The led light is a great feature. One thing I wish the set had was an additional bit storage clip, it only comes with one, even a little magnet on the tool would be nice. Another small downside is the direction switch position, Its hard to change with one finger while holding the drill with one hand. Not a huge problem but takes some getting used to. Also when the battery is out of the drill it must lay on its side due to the belt clip that hangs off, not as big deal but a little annoying for storage reasons. None of these issues are total deal breakers, these are still quality tools.

Makita tools are great. These power tools are strong. The battery charger does the job in 30 minutes!

A couple things bug me about the impact driver:

1) It is challenging to control the trigger to get a nice slow speed - it is too sensitive - would be nice to have two speed ranges - or maybe reduce the max speed.

2) The fwd/rev buttons are a bit too low down onto the grip and get bumped accidentally when my hand is at the top of the grip area.

Makita makes a great 18V impact and hammer drill combo. Best of the cordless combos taht we have used (milwaukee, dewalt, etc.) These tools take a beating day in and day out, rain or shine. I have used this tool for 2 months. I feel this is a great combo tool set and I am completely satisfied.

After reading some of the reviews, I was hesitant to order the set but being a very satisfied owner of several Makita tools including earlier generation Makita cordless drills, I decided to give the Combo set a try (even knowing it is Made in China; read on.)

Makita does a great job with ergonomics. The drill is a good manageable weight, has plenty of power, battery life, is well balanced, and does not have any skin pinch points. The trigger and reversing switch are positioned for easy fingertip control (I checked out the competitors and the Makita BHP454 in the combo set had the best fit in my hand.)

The hammer drill is very effective. I was surprised how efficient the hammer drill is at drilling 3/8 inch holes in concrete. I drilled 6 holes in the same time it used to take me to drill one with my older, non impact, cordless drill.

I checked the chuck run out by mounting a 1/2" diameter precision dowel pin in the chuck and measured run out with a 0.0005" increment dial indicator. Run out was less than 0.005" which I figure is very acceptable for a hand held drill.

Regarding being "Made in China". I am generally very ANTI when it comes to Chinese made products. My experience has been that most Chinese products are made with poor quality control, poor heat treatment, inferior components, etc. I have experienced the inferior junk that often comes from China and, after many bad experiences, I have made it a habit to, whenever possible, completely avoid purchasing Chinese Made products. However, knowing Makita's reputation and quality, and working as a Manufacturing Engineer for many years, I have had the experience of working directly with Japanese companies and evaluating their workforce transition to China. What I experienced and I believe this is the case with Makita, if properly done, the product quality does not suffer because components initially come from Japan until such time the China operation can prove they can competently and consistently manufacture quality components. When making this transition, the Japanese are experts at exercising Complete Quality Control so the product is comparable to those coming from Japan.

Amazon is excellent at taking back any product that a customer is not satisfied with so I figure there is no risk to the customer if a product does not perform as advertised.

In summary, this is a fine set and I would not hesitate to recommend purchasing the Combo Set.

This grinder is pretty good for a cordless. Only two complaints.

1. When battery gets low or if you are pressing too hard the red light goes on and the grinder shuts off. It does this all the time.

2. Thumb on/off switch turns off way too easily. If you barely touch it shuts off.

Other than that no complaints. I bought it because I was installing a lot of commercial steel doors and always needed a grinder for thresholds, door shoes and sweeps, and all the other little items that needed to be trimmed. I've also used it recently (just light use) with a diamond blade for cutting tile, bricks, and concrete; Mostly for items that interfere with the installation of doors.

If I could make any improvement it would be to change the switch to make it not so touchy.

I've had a Makita XLT kit for about a year now, and there have been several occasions when I really wished that I could just snap an 18-volt battery on a portable grinder and do a small job. Finally, when my wife wasn't looking, I decided to pull the trigger--and am I glad I did. I used it immediately to cut through a metal sink drain (Think: water), a situation where a saw was clumsy and a 110v grinder would be folly. Fast and powerful cutting!

I would not recommend this tool for heavy-duty, repetitive work, but smaller for jobs it is convenient and more than adequate.

I got this in a kit, and figured it would be just another ho-hum light, like the flashlight that comes with just about every cordless kit so they can claim it includes one more tool than it really does. Other than Dewalt's snakelight, none of them really offer any advantage, other than using rechargeable batteries.

Then I decided to try a Nite Ize LRB-07-PR1W 1-Watt LED Bulb Upgrade/Replacement for Most C/D-Battery Flashlights. Even though they're only designed for up to 6-cell lights (9v), both the bulbs I tried worked fine. Going off the specs, the light should last a whole day with the slim battery, or over 2 days with the fat battery. I left it on all day with a half-charged slim battery, and I got tired of looking at it before the battery died. It turns a so-so light into a long-lasting, extremely bright light... too bad Makita didn't make it LED from the beginning!

About the only downside is the lack of beam focusing, though other cordless lights aren't focusable either. You must pick either a wide flood beam (the cheaper Nite Ize bulb) comparable to the regular bulb, or a narrow spot beam (the linked product) that doesn't even hit the reflector.

Only bought because I already have extra batteries for my drills available. It is a bit flimsy for field use. It had not broken yet but I'm sure one good fall and it will. Light quality is very good. Adjustable head needs more defined detents [positions] it just "flops" down too easily. More substantial feel/weight for field use. Needs to be able to take numerous drops at 6'-10' for me to be able to recommend to the professional. My suggestion to Makita, have the folks who engineered/designed the current version of the job site radio RE-design this light!

My 35 year old skill, as were ALL worm drive saws used by true carpenters has the blade on the left. We used to call the saws with the blade on the right home owner 'side winders'. This is a very nice portable saw, for a left-handed person! For that user, I would rate it at 4-5 stars.

Maybe I should be more generous than a 1-star rating since the picture clearly depicts a left-handed saw if you think about how you are going to use it. But come on... we're used to disclaimers on left-handed tools and I don't remember seeing any of the customery warnings on either the website or in the instructions for this saw. What's worse is that Makita doesn't seem to make a right-handed version of a 6 1/2" cordless saw! What is Makita thinking?

My AC powered Makita circular saw is the mirror image of this one, with the blade on the right hand side of the handle. Typically, when I use a circular saw, I place the piece being cut on a surface or set of sawhorses in front of me with the section to be cut off hanging off the right hand side. Then I can hold the workpiece steady with my left hand or knee while the large part of the sole plate of the saw stays on the work that is held to the table. The cut off piece falls away to the right. If you try to use this saw that way, with the saw blade on the left hand side of the handle, only the small sliver of the soleplate to the left of the blade is resting on the stable part of the workpiece. The large portion of the soleplate under the motor is resting on the part of the workpiece that will drop away when the cut is finished. This makes it very hard to control the saw as you finish the cut. In addition to ruining the cut, this useage could be considered dangerous.

Make sure you really want a left-handed saw before buying this one.

The tools have a lot of power and are extremely light. Are made very tough. The sawzall cuts straight. Trim saw is easy to use, cut through a yellow pine header no problem. Love the impact driver but need higher quality bits.Cordless hammer drill is great.Shot down some anchors in crete no problem, fast. Job site radio is okay would be nice if it was a charger to. Grinder works well and the light is nice.Best thing is you get to pick another tool and battery free. I picked another sawzall as we are always tearing them up. The tool set was shipped in the factory carton which was designed to be placed on the retail store shelf. When I got the shipment, accessory parts had already and were still falling out of the box. Some parts like the cut-off wheel were broken as well. Amazon gave me what I thought to be a very reasonable discount for the problems. To avoid this in the future either Makita or Amazon needs to provide a real shipping package for what otherwise is a great set of tools.

I am a marine contractor who does installation and repair on all types of yachts and I purchased this set a little over six months ago and use it on a daily basis. I couldn't be more satisfied with it. The drill and impact driver are of excellent quality and they are small and light. I have no problem getting them in to tight spaces and using them for hours on end. The battery life when using these two tools is excellent and I have to only charge the batteries once or twice a week.

The other tools are not so great on battery life and not as powerful. If you are a professional carpenter who spends a lot of time with a circular saw, I'm sure you wouldn't buy this set with the intention of the battery saw replacing your mainstay. On the other hand, I love not having to go look for an extension cord when I need to make a quick cut. The grinder is also terrible on battery life and nowhere near as powerful as a decent corded grinder. Again, I love having it for quick cuts, and every once in a while, for some quick sanding. It cannot run more than 15 minutes constantly on a fully charged battery. The reciprocating saw seems to be best on battery life, but that may be just because it is really not the kind of tool that I use for more than a few minutes at a time.

Now, in terms of a comparison with other tool companies, I would have to say that the Dewalt stuff really feels stronger. It is all much heavier. The makita impact has a few little plastic things on it, like a glow in the dark ring around the business end of it, that are poorly put on and kind of trashy. My impression is that dewalt doesn't pull stuff like that. On the other hand, I am happy with how much smaller and lighter the makita stuff, especially for the huge amount of power that the drill and impact driver have.

As well, makita offers the widest variety of bare tools that run with the same batteries. Granted, I haven't bothered to purchase any of them yet, but I like to keep my options open!

Bought this set in October and am very pleased with it. We debated about buying the set without the radio, but decided to go with this one because we always kept saying we needed a weather radio and thought this could work for that. Well, we are very impressed with the radio and my husband takes it with him everywhere and the sound and clarity is phenomenal. We even hooked up our iTouch to it. I didn't mean to go on about the radio, but it was such a pleasant surprise. As far as the tools go, A+, the impact drill is so light and my husband(works construction) is the envy of the guys at work and everyone wants one. I bought that drill for him last year and he used that for EVERYTHING. We also had been remodeling our house and it worked great, especially with the rapid charger. He sold that drill so that he could go ahead and get this bigger set. He has been really impressed with this Makita set. I researched A lOT on these, this is the one you want! The impact drill in this set has the most torque/in. and more power than the platinum Makita drills. I know he has used the other tools too and he has had no complaints. The only thing I know he doesn't like is the bag. He likes the hard case better, but you can buy those fairly cheap online too. The bag is nice in the fact that it's like a duffle with the pull out handle and wheels, you could use it for a piece of luggage. But not real practical for a construction site though. He keeps it in his truck and takes out what he needs. Plus, the price on Amazon is very reasonable. I looked on ebay as well, you might, maybe, find one cheaper for the same set, but Amazon is very competitive with the ebay prices, plus you get free shipping and a guarantee.

Great combination for the price. I'm a landlord with 16 apt to fix and maintain. I did a lot of research before settling on this combo. I've been using them for about 3 weeks now and they're great. The circular saw is light and powerful, the impact drill is amazing, I used the grinder to cut tiles and it works great. Some of the other reviews mentioned poor packaging, mine came very well packed with packing material all around. Maybe amazon got the message and improved it. This combo is great for starters or even veteran professionals. I definitely recommend it.

For a 2-pound flyweight drill, it's got very satisfactory power. The batteries drive plenty of screws per charge, and recharge faster than I can use them up. If you need arm-breaking power for big holesaws and stuff, this may not be your ideal pick, but if you need something compact that won't wear your arm out when working overhead or at arm's length, it's pretty good. The automatic LED "headlight" comes on when the trigger is pulled, and stays on briefly afterwards, which I found useful when trying to line stuff up under a stairway.

One nitpick: the battery-disengagement tabs are a little stiff, so it might be a nuisance if you have arthritic hands.

I have been using impact drivers professionally since they were introduced many years ago (they were 9.6 volt, nicad). I rarely use them for drilling but for fastening, it is the tool of choice. This is my 3rd Makita, from the 9.6 to the 12 and now the 18 volt and I have never worn one out completely. Batteries, yes, many. Nicads didn't last all that long in number of cycles, NiMH were much better and now L-Ion which are a vast improvement. Now for this tool. Makita also makes this in a 3 speed model with brushless motor for considerably more money. Since this is not the only tool I own I have to consider cost. The 3 speeds of the other tool are unnecessary; I have absolute control of the tool thru the variable speed trigger. As far as the brushless motor with more fasteners per charge and extended motor life, yes it would be nice if cost were not a big factor but I have never worn out the tool or replaced brushes in the other Makita's. The other tool on the market that I have experience with is the Panasonic, which is at least equal to the Makita. And Panasonic has their own battery technology (they achieve the same performance using only 14.4 volts) They have the selectable 3 speed and brushless motor but are substantially more expensive. So, for less money I don't feel that I have lost. The Makita name has served me well.

I work construction and the company I build houses for uses steel studs. We use impact drivers like regular carpenters would use a hammer. This tool takes the punishment of all day use in a tough environment of heat moisture and of course dust. I buy Makita because its light yet durable. The Dewalt impact is heavier and does seem to have more torque and power but not much. I like the Lithium batteries over the old NiCads because of the need to grab a half charged battery from the charger. This would be a death blow to a NiCads life span. Finally old Dewalt is making their impacts with Lithium Batteries but more expensive. I will stick with Makita.

I purchased this as a higher capacity battery for my 6270 12v Cordless Drill (which comes with 1.3 Amp batteries as standard). This is a nice battery with heaps of life in it. I can go all day on driving tasks without running out of juice. Plenty of power and charges up quite quickly on the Makita pod charger.

A lot of what was said here was true-but there are many 'factors' to consider. First of all, the old, orange NI-CAD Makita battery had a less amp hr rating than the subsequent newer NI-MH battery. Yes it does require a compatible charger, as the old one will not charge NI-MH and for that matter, the old chargers probably won't charge the newer orange NI-CAD batteries if they have a higher amp hr rating that the originals. Yeah it all sucks, much like computers, as they keep changing the rules and the hardware. But....every generation of battery works much better than its previous generation. You don't see people in the trades using NI-MH or Lithium-Iron batteries lamenting the old days of NI-CAD batteries. A lot of what kills rechargeable batteries is how and when you charge them. For NI-CAD batteries, it was always beneficial to run them down before charging and so later NI-CAD chargers would then 'discharge' the batteries for you before they charged them-worked pretty well. Now with NI-MH and Lithium-Iron that's not as critical, except that you can even damage Lithium-Iron if you slam them into a charger all the time at near full charge. Heat too will kill any of the generation batteries if you put them in the charger hot. Before you buy a new drill "kit", look for companies that offer lifetime or extended warranties to replace the Lithium-Iron batteries for free (or just shipping). Truly, if you have to buy Lithium-Iron batteries outright, you'd be much better off buying another "kit", which of course is not eco-friendly. I have to use about a dozen rechargeable drills in my profession and the batteries have always been the Achilles Heel of the "kits", sometimes to the point of 'voodoo'!

Neither Makita nor Amazon note that this tool requires hex shank drill bits to function as drill. Neither Lowes nor Home Depot or the Ace near my home carry these bits and for good reason: no other tool requires them. I can only get them from Amazon. I think not being explicit about the need for Makita's proprietary drill bit sets is careless at best and deceptive at worst. I put this on my wish list and must now return it while explaining the reasoning to my sister who thought she was doing me a favor. I'm not about to replace my collection of carbide tipped drill bits I use for boat building and maintenance.

This IS a drill-driver. It just operates in a more user-friendly way than an old-fashioned chuck. The box CLEARLY ILLUSTRATES AND DESCRIBES the "Quick-Change 1/4" Hex-Shank" method of accepting bits. Lucky me, I bought mine at Ace Hardware on Black Friday for $80 + tax. It came with a plastic storage box, a nice canvas holster, and a canvas 65-pc accessory kit with every bit you could want, including hex bit drills. The canvas accessory bit kit fits nicely in the plastic storage case along with the drill, the holster, and the charger. It is light-weight and very compact (great for tight spots). Plenty of power. Has a nice LED light that illuminates very well, and stays on for about 15 seconds after trigger release: Bump the trigger to turn it on, use the light to locate your work within the 15 seconds (or bump it again), and begin drilling or driving. It even has a 1-year warrranty on the battery and a THREE YEAR WARRANTY on the rest. Mine came with only one battery, but it recharges fairly quickly (less than an hour).

I have been very happy with this purchase. The battery is long lasting and it has plenty of power. The one drawback is it only accepts hex drill bits as it does close down on the round bits. With the number of hex drill bits it isn't a real problem. I would recommend this drill as its small size is misleading for the big job it does.

This was listed as a "driver-DRILL kit", however, it will not function as a drill. It does not have the essential part that would allow it to accept drill bits, namely, a drill chuck. NOWHERE in the description of this item does it mention this fact. The documentation that came with the item did not mention this fact. Nothing would alert a person that an extra, not-included part was needed to function as a drill. I returned it and bought a Craftsman.

I built the interior of a log cabin in Vermont this past summer. Did it all with just the 18 volt battery powered tools from Makita like this Jig saw. They all worked perfectly. They may not be the cheapest tools but they certainly are one of the best. This Jig Saw is solid and powerful and the battery last longer than it takes to charge one up.

This was an addition to a 6 tool kit I purchased earlier. The saw is a welcome addition, it is easy to use and has plenty of power. I would like to see a speed limiting dial and the option of ordering with a rip fence. A good supplemental tool but anyone doing a lot of work should consider a good corded saw first, preferably a Bosch or Festool.

This is a very fine tool. The blade change is quick with no tools needed. There is a small led light and a blower to help you see the work. It is compact, even with the battery, and balances well. It comes with replaceable no-mar footplate and anti-splinter inserts. The only drawback is you still need an allan wrench to change the bevel angle of the sole plate.

I really appreciate having this tool around. It's funny how many times I find myself using this for odd jobs or DIY projects. I use it more than I thought I would. I've cut metal hollow core doors, luan, PVC, small tree limbs (I know, poor use for this fine tool), etc. It is a bit pricy, but when you consider working without the constraint of wires, it's worth it. I've used it in my attic where there was no easy access to power. The LED was also quite useful there. To me it seems to drain the battery quickest out of my Makita LXT tools. Better have a spare.

"Batteries are too short lived - not so the tools" 2010-03-18

I am shopping for my 7th (and maybe 8th) Makita 18v 2.6 Ah batteries. I bought a combo pack of circular saw, reciprocating saw, drill, and flashlight seven years ago to replace my 4+ year old DeWalt 14.4v set which was malfunctioning. Since I absolutely had to have a hammerdrill for drilling in block and concrete, I also bought a hammerdrill. Total number of batteries: four and two chargers. The four lasted only four years. I expected more, since the DeWalt NiCd's lasted that long, but I stopped by a Makita reapir shop in Dayton, NJ to have the 18v circular saw shoe plate aligned, and the service guy really sold me on Makita. Bought a two pack of 18v #1834 Makita NiMh batteries and after two years 10 months, one is shot and the other still going, but doesn't hold a charge as well as it used to.

The good news is that every one of the Makita power tools is running strong even after being abused for seven years. I use them hard and sadly have abused them a bit. (dropped the Recip. saw and drill in a lake on two different occasions while installing bulkheads - no problem! I use them in the rain often.)

So I think the batteries deserve only a 3, but the tools are 5+ out of 5.

p.s. My daughter's 9.6v long handle drill is over 12 years old and works perfectly, and the two original NiCd batteries are weaker, but still work.

I love these drills! I watched a cabinet installer who was working at my house use these tools one day and got a chance to question him about battery life and power, and then I borrowed them for a few minutes to use myself. He used them both the drill and the driver intermittently for about 5 hours on one charge, and secured numerous fasteners, and drilled several 1 1/2" holes for grommets in these cabinets.

I was sold, after watching him use the tools, and I have not been disappointed since I bought my own set.

Awesome cordless power in a compact size! I picked this kit up (on sale for $150) at Home Depot and opened a credit account saving another 20%! I assemble conveyors and automated equipment for a living so I use my tools hard. I thought this kit would last for a year and need to be repaired or replaced like my previous Dewalt tools. Nearly 18 months later they are still going strong and the batteries are showing no sign of weakening. Only two complaints. One, the white colored plastic is now grey with grease and grime. And second, half the time the tools are MIA 'cause another worker stole them from me! Not only am I using them, but others are as well. If you get one, or any other cordless driver, check out the "Bi-Torsion" bits and holders from Wera. They make the 1/4" hex chucks so much more handy and versatile. Never buy the junk from the box stores. I've (and other employess using my impactor)nearly 200 conveyor sections with the same 5/32" bit. That's over 2000 stainless flat head screws with the same tool.

I bought this kit to work on cars mainly when I do head and cam swaps. Which involves removing the entire front fascia and then I have to tear down the top of the engine from the intake manifold to removing the oil pump, timing gear and heads. Granted I use an air powered impact on the heavy stuff but I use this kit to re-assemble everything. The little light is perfect and when needed it will stand on end to free up both hands. Overall, it is an above average flash light. It's bright, comes with two bulbs, matches other Makita tools, has an easy to use push button switch, and the light rotates nicely. The strap it comes with is useless but for me that was unimportant. I just question whether or not it will work after a drop or two. This will work well for most people who will use it lightly around the house, but I wouldn't recommend this for a contractor unless all they use is cordless Makita. I could be wrong about the durability, as I've only owned it for a month or two and havent dropped it yet.

Having seen this driver in action and having read the reviews, I purchased this with high expectations...it has lived up to those expectations. I was fed up with stripped screws using my cordless drill and I wanted something that would eliminate that problem. I needed to put up some temporary staging/scaffolding (consisting of 2x4's and 3/4" plywood)in my great room in order to hang a pool table light above a pool table that I did not want to move. The ceiling height was 13' and I wanted to make something sturdy. This driver easily put 3" screws in without stripping a single one. I was also able to easily hold the driver over my head to screw as well. After the light was installed and I needed to break down the staging, it removed all screws painlessly and all lumber and screws can be re-used. Ready for the next project! Absolutely a five star rating!!!

I purchased these tools to fill out my tool box, which I mostly use for Automobile repairs, but find that it makes sense to have a few high-quality saws around the house, to deal with the inevitable projects that come up. I order from Amazon, with free shipping, and the tools arrived about a week later. I've heard others complain about the packaging, but in my case, the packaging was perfect, and everything was packaged, as it should be, inside the box.

When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised to also find a very well made carry bag, with roll-around wheels, and a rugged look and feel.

The tools are simply the best, and even better than I anticipated. Both the drill and the impact wrench come with LED lighting, to assist you if you're working in dark places.

The drill and impact wrench have perfect rotational balance, and while the sawzall is a bit heavier than expected, it is most certainly bullet-proof, and able to cut just about anything.

Great tools at a great price, what else needs to be said.

I am really impressed with this cordless driver. For as small as it is, it really has a lot of torque. I bought another brand that practically had no torque at all. I sent it back and bought this one. You get what you pay for. The work light really lights up the area where you are using the driver. If I had a complaint at all of this tool, it would be it is hard to drive a screw at a real slow speed, for instance, when you are just starting the screw. The trigger is real sensitive. You have to use small movements of the trigger. As I use the tool more, I am getting better at selecting the proper speed for driving screws, etc. I like the compact size of the driver also.

"Works fine for me..." 2010-04-06

I went ahead and invested in a pair of these batteries despite the mixed reviews, figuring I'd at least get a year out of them with the warranty. So far, they've performed just fine, even on tools that are supposed to only use the BL1830. I mostly use them on the BHP454 drill (note: this is one of the tools that's keyed for the 1830 pack) and BTD141 impact driver when I'm not going to be using them for long, so the decreased runtime doesn't bother me. I also use them on the angle grinder and recip saw (after removing the little tab on the tools) for light work in tight spaces. I wouldn't want them to be my only batteries, but they're a great addition to a couple of the larger batteries if you have a few tools that can use them.

These slim packs are very handy on the drill, impact, and flashlight- the lighter weight and smaller size are noticeable, especially with the smaller (BDF/BHP452) drills. However, buyer beware when it comes to using them on the 'heavier' tools, as they are keyed for the larger batteries because they can draw more current than these smaller batteries can provide without damaging the cells. So you probably shouldn't slap one of these on your circular saw and go ripping 2x12s all day, or you'll kill the pack very quickly. Makita isn't trying to screw you into buying more batteries, they're trying to make sure you don't kill your batteries.

Another note, considering how many complaints of defective packs there are: don't run these batteries down to nothing, and try not to store them fully charged. Running them into the ground is a sure way to damage the cells, and I've read estimates of up to 20%/year capacity loss for a fully-charged pack, compared to as low as 2%/year for a pack stored @ 40% charge.

And of course, like any cordless tool/battery purchase- shop your options before buying batteries separately. I got the BHP452HW kit for only $50 more than 2 batteries. That's a cheap, easy way to have a spare drill or driver and charger for around the house, or to sell to recoup the extra cost.

I'm knocking off one star because Makita doesn't do a good job of letting people know that these slim packs only work on certain tools- and not very many, either. That's been a complaint for years now, and it's still not mentioned anywhere in their literature or website- even my local Makita dealer didn't know they weren't compatible with all LXT tools. It's not like it's standard practice- Bosch's and Milwaukee's slim packs fit their entire lineup, AFAIK.

I've read a lot of bad reviews of the slimline batteries but so far my experience has been good. I bought a pair through Amazon two years ago along with an impact driver. The driver gets moderate use (2-3 days a week, every week) for both drilling and driving. Primarily driving but regular drilling as well; pilot holes and 1/2 in or 3/4 in spade bits. The batteries last pretty well and charge very quickly so I just swap when one gets low and the backup is always charged in time.

I had one 'bad battery' scare where I had not used the tool for a few days but had left the battery on the charger. The first batt ran low and I switched to what the charger said was a fully charged battery...however it was completely dead. Full-on flat. I switched back, thinking that somehow I had confused the two but they were both dead. So I put the supposedly-charged-but-actually-dead battery back on the charger after waiting a minute or two. It charged up as it should have. That has happened a few times since...whenever I leave a battery on the charger for several days. I am wondering if there is a charger problem of some kind.

ANyway, if I charge the batteries and then leave them on the bench next to the charger they seem to hold up just fine.

Same as the others posting here, one of the batterys in my expensive drill driver set lasted about 3 months (used 3 times), and the other battery lasted about one year (used about 12 times). The drills are very nice, but the battery's are totally bad and I suspect Makita knows it since everybody seems to be having the same problem.

Like many of the other reviews, the drill is outstanding............very light weight and excellent performance. However, the batteries are unreliable with a very short life span. I bought the drill and impact set with two batteries. With less than 5 hours of use on one battery it is already 'defective' according to the charger. At $75 per battery the batteries life span should be much longer. I will use the remaining battery until it too is defective and then sell the drill/impact on Ebay and buy a Milwaukee. I have always bought Milwaukee products and my shop is full of them but I really liked this drill when it first came out..........I should have stuck with Milwaukee..........lesson learned..........won't make this mistake again.

Plan on spending $1 per battery charge use on average if you're going to buy these batteries. I bought a Makita drill kit that came with two 1.5 A-hour (small) batteries and a charger. One of the small batteries died after about 40 charges. So I bought two of the large batteries, 3.0 Amp-hour. They lasted longer, but one of the large batteries died after about 80 charges. Similar to what others have stated, I also like the drill. The batteries don't last much longer than the one year warranty, if that, and nothing like the 1200 cycles the service manager claims.

Save your receipt if you plan on getting your batteries replaced, otherwise they go by the manufacturer's date which may be months earlier than you bought it. I took the time to take the batteries to a service shop and recycled two dead batteries. They wouldn't credit me on a 40 cycle battery because I didn't bring it in before the warranty expired.

If you depend on a cordless tool, it would be wise to stock extra batteries for several reasons. As the batteries get older, they don't hold as much of a charge. Also, the batteries go without warning. I keep four batteries in my truck. Two to use, one in case battery is losing power and one in case a battery dies without warning. All the batteries are the large size. (The small ones are a waste of money.) That's over $200 in batteries.

It seems that cordless tools are like inkjet printers. With inkjets they make money on selling the ink, and with cordless tools, they hook you with buying replacement batteries.

I have found I reach for this much more than I ever reach for my heavy 18v tools. It's just a pleasure to use it's light and fast. I am not a profesional but I do enjoy using a good tool that makes a job easier, and so far this sure has. I wasn't too sure about the case when I ordered it but after I have had it for a while I love the case, it has room for the charger, both tools, plus you can add in a drill/bit set easily (the Makita set fits great). I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Part of my work involves racking/unracking network equipment, installing wall mount IP phones, etc. This tool is nearly perfect from the small size for working around racks and cable management, LED light, two speed settings, variable RPM trigger, powerful torque for its size and battery performance. The kit comes with two batteries that are quick to charge from empty to full and don't have the power leakage problem when sitting idle. The only improvements I can think of are to add a built in leveler for drilling and change the color to something other than white. I never touch the impact driver so I could've gone with the driver-drill only kit for less money. I just need to look for that elusive 6" #3 phillips bit.

"Great design, lightweight, speakers just OK...." 2010-02-08

If you are looking for a jobside radio that plays music and also AM talk radio without a big and bulky box then this is the radio for you. Everything about the radio is well designed and compact as well playing songs from an IPOD which is much clearer than using the radio. The one thing that I didn't like about the radio is the fact that the speakers are just full range speakers and Makita definitely skimped here with the quality since in my opinion the sound is just decent and not befitting of something that needs more power and a bigger sound. I think if you don't really care that much about the sound and you just want to hear background music or talk then this radio will suffice for your needs. If you want something of better quality than you might want to consider taking out those cheap little 3" full range speakers and upgrading to a better quality 4" speaker since it's almost impossible to find 3" speakers that have separate speakers inside the 3" size.

This leads me to what I think needs to be done to make this Jobsite radio rival any jobsite radio out there. The problem is that Makita engineers were attempting to make a radio that is easy and portable to move around and still give decent sound in such a small box, but it still doesn't work because the speakers are not big enough and their quality does not match up to the rest of the radio. Here is the fix to make this radio a 6 star product! Upgrade and modify the plastic body to use 4" speakers with separates inside instead of using the existing 3" speakers which are better off in the trash can or donated for something else.

I went and shopped around for 4" car speakers and in about half a day on a Saturday, I modified my radio and installed the new speakers and now it sounds like something that you can hear and actually the amp inside will play just fine until distortion kicks in about 3/4 of a turn on the volumn knob. No, it is not High fidelity but I will say that it is an 80% improvement from what it sounded like before and will sound as good as ANY jobsite radio out there without all the weight. The main reason you want to buy this radio is the fact that it's light weight, small, has a great handle to move around, and has rubber on the corners to protect it from damage. The speakers are just not good. The main reason I decided to do this is because my wife's IPOD player sounded so much better when I had them next to each other that it made me realize that I would not be happy with the sound.

If you don't want to hassle with this radio then of course it is a great design however, in my opinion the sound is not even befitting of something on a jobsite or a workshop. If you want to make it a rock solid radio that will play with much better sound than take out those speakers and replace them with 4" speakers that you find at your local stereo place like a Best Buy. Listen to them before you buy them. Once you find a speaker you like shop around and purchase on the internet. I went to Frye's and purchased a pair of KICKER speakers. I took out the old speakers and I had to make the openings a bit bigger to accomodate the wider diameter speakers. Because you have limited real estate you will need to glue the corners of the metal backer plates inside so that the screws have a tread to screw into. The old metal backer plates are no good since you have to cut them. You will also have to disconnect and then reconnect the wiring to the new speakers. When the glue dries (use polyurethane construction adhesive) connect all the wiring and by the end of the day the glue is dry and then rescrew the supplied screws into the original metal backplates pieces. The hardest part and cutting into the plastic body to allow for the magnet to fit into the diameter opening. Also since the magnets are not deep there will be no issues with the magnets butting up to each other.

You will also have to cut out a little bit of the rubber since the speaker grills will hit it. When you are done you will have an awesome radio with a 6 star rating!!!!!! It was worth the addition $ 35.00 plus I spent for the speakers and the radio will cost more than $ 100.00 but you have something that is really unique and better quality than anything out there.

If you are handy it's worth the time and effort, if you are not then be happy with what you have.

I purchased this radio a few months ago and have been pleased with it. I wanted a portable radio that I could connect with my iPod and could use with Mikita 18 Volt batteries, for listening to audio books, either at the job site, or on the road. This radio fits the bill.

Its pluses: The antenna is easy to remove (antennae always break). Comes in a well protected case that opens up so you can store accessories. Has 10 presets, alarm, easy tuning knob, long run time on a fully charged 18 volt battery.

Its flaws: If you want a super loud radio/boombox this isn't the one. The sound is good, but it doesn't have a treble/bass adjustment. If you're using a 18 volt battery you have to plug your iPod in the front. AC adapter is big and bulky. If you need to buy a 18 volt battery, they cost almost as much as the radio.

Overall this is a nice radio with a rugged design, some cool features, and is reasonably price. It has it's limits, and it's not for everyone.

Professional user. Like digital tuner good pick up. Decent sound for size. Runs off many Makita batteries. Input for mp3/CD player via male/male 3.5mm cable. VERY sturdy/solid unit. Better overall size and features compared to whats on the market right now. Flex antenna was an initial selling feature for me as every previous job site radio has a broken antenna.Good value for the money.

After 1 year of owning: o.k. not the most dynamic sound, but then again it is NOT designed or marketed to be a home stand-alone system. Really carries sound well when working outside or in a large indoor work area such as new home construction, additions, basement, tailgating too. I think they had to engineer a specific mid-band width to get good open area coverage. Down side, can't charge batteries of any kind while plugged into 120V. Needs bass boost button, equalizer or pre-set equalizer settings to get more vibrant sound in more enclosed areas. Needs a usb hook up, then I can charge my mp3 while playing OR use a usb flash to play tunes...on a job site mp3's don't last long unattended!!!

Bottom Line. Buy it. If they took my suggestions and added a few more features I'd buy it again.

The reception on this radio is really bad. I bought one and returned it because I thought it was defective. The replacement was the same. I work outside construction so there isn't a problem with interference from walls. Some of the stations would drift over time and I'm not talking a small drift like 96.1 to 96.3. Im talking 96.1 drifting into 98.1.

I have had better reception from a radio I got for free with a magazine subscription.

Also the auxiliary plug for mp3 players inside the battery compartment is useless because it is so close to the battery you can NOT plug anything into it because the battery is in the way. Even if you try to take the battery out, plug in the cord and then put the battery in you can not get the battery back in because the plug is in the way.

I gave up and got my money back.

I love the great tool designs of Makita but something tells me they did not design this radio. Either that of their designers should stick to tools and stay out of the radio business.

I have the Makita's BSS610 and I love it. I fast battery charger makes it so I always have power.

This unit spins up fast and cuts like the wind, just keep the batteries fresh or it will lose spin-power on you quick.

I found I could cut about 30-60 2x4s easily with a single 1.5 Amp battery. The 3.0 amp battery is nice, but the quick charger takes care of me with a pair of 1.5 amp batts.

Has a die cast machined base plate that makes for smooth and accurate cuts. The trigger and safety thumb switch are very easy to use right or left handed compared to the DeWalts' I have been using. Well balanced with the Lithium battery. Another neat feature is the depth gauge on the blade guard that makes for easy setting of the blade depth. This saw more than met my expectations.

Got this in the mail two days ago. I intended on using until I got my DeWalt runnig again (Ipe and remodeling, is hard on chordless saws). Well I put it through the paces today w/ the Makita blade that came on it none the less. And it is now the main tool and the DeWalt is the back up. I can't wait till I get the Freud Diablo blade on it to see what it can really do! Easy to use rip fence, good eurognomics, smooth running and powerful. A great chordless saw. "Great saw for the weight and price" 2010-01-23

I've used this saw for cutting old construction lumber, tree branches, plastic pipe, and metal. It works like a champ. Surprising amount of power for a cordless.

One of the other reviewers noted that the blade falls out after a while. I asked a Makita rep about this and he said that sawdust can get into the blade opening (sawing overhead) and this prevents the blade from going in all the way (even though it seems secure). I have noticed this, but blowing it out with compressed air makes it as good as new. The blade mounting style is superior to my Milwaukee sawzall. On the Makita you rotate the blade lock 45 degrees and it clicks open and stays there. Then you insert the blade with one hand and it automatically rotates back to lock the blade in - so much nicer.

Yes, it uses all the standard blades.

Well worth the price.

I have owned Makita products for years. I would like to say several, but due to the fact they last so long you do not need several. One last for years. I still have an ald 7.4v drill that still works, though the batteries are weak. What do you expect for a 8 year old drill. It really bums me out to have to give this saw only one star, and that is only because it is a Makita. Battery is great, light weight, durable, but will not hold a blade for squat. After it first use the blade kept spitting out. I returned it to a Makita sevice center. This is a nother reason for only one star. After 3 months, I finally got it back. No difference. It still will not hold a blade. I am completely disapointed with the quick change blade holder. My saw came with the kit. If you are looking for a kit, get one without this saw and then go buy a different brand reciprocating saw, perhaps Hitachi. Until Makita gets a clue and fixes this flaw and perhaps do a better turnaround in the service depatment area I will have to look elsewhere for a reciprocating saw that will hold a blade. But I will still buy their drills, impacts, and circular saws.

First off, if you put this side to side with a corded super Sawzall, the Sawzall will win hands down. For what it is, the Makita is a truly amazing product.

Some quick points / comments:

Never had any problems with changing the blades and I regularly get mine full of mud using it with a long blade to cut out tree roots.

The Batteries last about 12 minutes if your using it really hard, and they get very hot and take 30-40 minutes before they are charged again, due to the additional time required to cool them. If your going to really use this saw hard on a regular basis, buy more batteries.

I used this saw with a 12" blade in it to cut down a 47 year old spruce tree when my chain saw wasn't available. It was over 15" thick. Took the saw a while, but it did it.

I've cut metal, plaster, metal lath, 4x4's, lots of conduit, lots of tree trimming / pruning, etc. It's really worked well on all of it.

One suggestion, you get what you pay for in terms of blades. I think the Bosch blades are some of the very best. Lenox blades are also very good, but tend to warp from the heat during heavy use more than the bosch blades do. The Milwaukee blades are pretty decent.

It likely won't replace your super sawzall for really heavy demo work, but for everything else, I think it is just an amazing tool.

I've owned many cordless reciprocating saws over the years and this would definitely be at the top of the list if it weren't for the fact that after using it for a short time the blades fall out while sawing! At first I thought I just didn't have them locked in properly, but I tried again several times, each time making sure it was completely locked in and it keeps falling out!!! This is exremely frustrating. Apparently I'm not the only one who's had this problem. I've tried different blades, but it just won't hold them. Otherwise it seems great! Good size, not too heavy, work light and plenty of power. I'm going to try to contact Makita to see if they have any suggestions.

This is an incredibly handy set that I am SO glad I purchased.

As I'm sure most people do, I think I have about 10 different accessory sets in my toolbox at this point and most of them are more of the same - a bunch of #2 phillips bits, a bit holder and some assorted other driver bits. This kit has a few things that really make it stand out. #1, it includes 3 different socket sizes in it as well as an adaptor that allows you to attach any standard 1/4" drive socket to your driver. It also includes some very high quality drill bits in commonly used sizes, but the star of the show for me is the "flip bit." This is an incredibly cool little invention. On one end you have a #8 countersink bit and on the other you have a #2 phillips bit and with the included sleeve adaptor, you can switch between them within seconds which comes in EXTREMELY handy when doing finish carpentry.

I own a number of makita tools (including their outstanding LXT impact driver) and like all of those, this is top quality and I would recommend it to anyone who has an impact driver and needs a starter kit.

"impact driver!" 2009-12-09

I had reservations about the light feature until I found out how bright it is and that it stays on for a while. I have even taken to just using it instead of carrying a flashlight too. There is also a glow in the dark ring that helps you find the impact driver in the dark. Sounds a little silly until you find out that the light is attached to something that can drive a 12" lag screw into a glu-lam with ease. It is also small enough to fit in tight quarters and light enough to use all day without causing the tennis elbow I was getting from my 18 volt Porter Cable hammer drill. Just getting the impact driver and charger was worth the cost but the drill is a nice bonus.

Well built all around! Solid feel yet lightweight for an 18V system. Silently delivers torque and speed. The grip and rubberized body ergonomics are just about perfect. These Li-Ion batteries last FOREVER!!! And having a backup driver is almost SINFUL. This combo replaces a 15yr old Makita Ni-Cad system...only because of battery obolesence. Makita has never disappointed and continues to deliver.

Be advised the charger is a GIGUNDOUS beast (apparently there's a memory chip in the batts that the charger uses to determine optimal usage and charge rates...sucker even has a cooling fan). Consequently the hard case is a bit oversized...but do not let this deter from the performance.

The LED lights are icing on the cake. Even the belt clips have come in handy...who knew?

For those that do their homework - Check the specs and you'll see this unit is superior to the competition.

Both tools are wonderfully light and compact. But I can't be the only one whose fingers accidentally hit the reverse switch while using the drill. Also, the ring that rotates to choose between drill/driver/hammerdrill modes is hard to turn and requires two hands to use. The drill is less powerful than my Milwaukee 28-volt, but much more pleasant to use because of its light weight.

The impact driver is disappointing. I had heard so many glowing comments about it, and thought it would be helpful for installing kitchen cabinets, but it usually either stripped the head of the screw or failed to drive it fully. On the other hand, I was able to sometimes drive Tapcon screws into concrete blocks without pre-drilling. I have heard that impact drivers have a steep learning curve, so maybe I simply haven't mastered this tool yet.

The battery charger makes an annoying high-pitched whine EVEN AFTER the battery is charged.

I have had this tool set for 3 months and it has been a pleasure to use them. I have very small hands and had no previous experience in using impact driver or drill. After trying out many different brand of driver and drills in stores, I chose Makita LXT series because they are light and powerful. Both the driver and drill sit perfectly in my palm, all the buttons are intuitively designed, and the operation is smooth and quiet. The battery took only 15 min or so to charge, and last a very long time. Highly recommended for average household use.

The drill is powerful and the hammer action is good for cement and brick fastner drilling. My only gripe is the chuck doesn't bite as hard as my Dewalt. The impact fastner is a beast! Light compact and battery last a really long time. I'm a general contractor and have Dewalt and Milwaukee lithium tools to compare. Makita and Dewalt win this round of lithium tools. Tool quality is excellent. The LED light and belt clip are handy.

Important to realize that lithium-ion powered drills have only been out for a few years and some manufacturers produced their first lithium-ion drills in 2009. The technology is changing and the drills get new features or refinements and a drill that was top of the pack in 2006 or 2007 may provide only average performance when compared to the new drills available in 2010. This is the case with Makita that had an early lead that has been whittled down over the past couple years.

We use a lot of drills and using the new lithium-ion battery models we have encountered many brands that are overly sensitive to overheating of the battery and cut power continually while trying to make holes 3" diameter or larger. The end result is it takes twice as long to cut the holes and the lack of continuous torque also is a bit unnerving. Almost all cordless drills are good at driving screws or making small diameter holes but when it comes to the tougher jobs the drills with the 3-speed gear boxes come out on top. This makes for a select group of Makita (BHP451), DeWalt (DCD970), and Ridgid.

We were using the drill on a job where we needed to make a series of 2-1/2" holes in stucco and wood using the new Blue Boar TCT stucco bits (which work incredibly well)and were using both Milwaukee and DeWalt lithium-ion drills and decided to give the Makita a try. We had used Makita in the past when they were about the only company making lithium-ion drill and wanted to see if the 2 speed gearbox provided power on par with the DeWalt DCD970 drill and it falls far short. The Makita has a more sensitive overload setup than the DeWalt but it is not as bad as the Milwaukee M18 which is pretty touchy. The end result is that the gearing is not right for large hole saws or even self-feed bits in wood with the stalling quite apparent and much longer times to bore the holes.

The Makita chuck tends to loosen up when there is a lot of vibration using a hole cutter in hard materials. No problems with small drill bits like the Hitachi chuck but not nearly as good as the DeWalt self-tightening chuck. In these situations it is important to watch and not accidentally drop the hole saw and abor as the chuck can loosen quite a bit before you even finish with the hole.

The feel of the hand grip is good and on par with the Milwaukee M18 but not as good as the new Bosch drills (which also have the least runout of any drill we have used). The drill seems to lug and require more effort to bore through touch materials so I doubt the drill produces the torque as stated by Makita. All the specs are pretty meaningless anyway with the lithium-ion battery packs as the power cutoff mechanism prevents the user from getting anywhere near 100% of the power from the drill. This is offset in large part by starting slow and using the lowest speed range of the drill with the 2-speed drills. With 3 speed gearbox equipped drills the middle speed range works the best with a combination of high torque and high RPM for smoother cutting.

Hard to appreciate the difference the middle speed range provides in usability of the drill for jobs that in the past demanded the use of a 15 amp stud drill. I have used the DeWalt DCD970 to make 6-1/4" holes in Hardie siding over plywood backing and the drill was up to the task. Naturally I used a Blue Boar tungsten carbide hole cutter and not a bi-metal hole saw. With a Lenox or Milwaukee bi-metal hole saw I would have smoked the drill and doubt very much that I could have finished the hole with just one battery. Using the right hole cutter makes all the difference in the world.

The high speed setting is also 25% slower than other drills we use and this comes into play when drilling holes in metal. Cobalt drills help a lot but it is another aspect where the Makita comes up short compared to competitors' drills.

Recharge times if you use the full size batteries is going to be more than 30 minutes and average as lithium-ion battery packs go. You can get faster recharge times with the half size battery but that really defeats the purpose of having a drill of like this.

When my almost-3-year-old Makita LXT hammer drill stopped doing what it's supposed to, I weighted the options: send it to Makita for repair and have the gears replaced (expensive!) or buy a new one (probably MORE expensive!). When I found this bare tool on Amazon, I couldn't believe my luck. I already have 3 18v batteries and charger...so this was a no-brainer. It arrived in just a few days and I was up and running again. It runs smooth, it's lighter than my 451z. The only difference besides the weight is that the older one, the 451, had 3 gears and the new models only have 2. Makita told me the reason for this change was too many people were stripping the 3rd gear, using this CORDLESS tool as a heavy-duty construction drill, which it's not. So they got rid of the 3rd gear, making the drill much smaller and lighter. The best part...after I got this drill, I found my receipts to the older drill and it was BARELY still within warranty. Makita fixed it for FREE and shipped it to me for FREE. Now I have 2 working hammer drills from my favorite company. 5 stars!

I have owned the Makita impact drivers for two years and have been very happy with them. The batteries are light, powerful and seem to hold their charge well. One battery that went bad was quickly replaced by Makita without question. So, when I needed to replace my venerable Porter Cable I looked to Makita, but did not need an additional charger or batteries as I already had three. So, this "tool only" package was ideal and at ~$60 it could not be beat. The tool has LOTS of power and a handy LED light too. Quite pleased overall.

Of course not a true hammer drill like the small chipping hammer drills but does have the hammer-as-you-drill feature. Get her done that is for sure. One kick ass drill for being cordless. This is one cordless that Makita makes which can be said to be better than Dewalt in power and performance. Most of the tools I have worked with on the construction site are either Makita or Dewalt. Usually the Dewalt has a little more ruggedness, weight, and power. I still choose the Makita because of the compactness and lightness. Also the Dewalt didn't have for the longesrt time the more reliable Lithium batteries. Still the Makita is the deal for me especially when buying new batteries because of the price difference with Dewalts costing 30% more. And these tools will last longer than the batteries!

Unfortunately, these batteries seem to last less than a year. I store them in the house at a stable temperature and yet I can only get about 10-15 minutes of use and that's it... I have had many drills and these NiMH batteries have been a big disappointment. At $140 for two new batteries, it seems smarter to buy a new drill and battery type. Hope this helps.

It was nice to finally get a real factory battery for my drill. I had priced the sub-c cells at a number of places thinking that I would take the old battery pack apart and solder these together to renew my battery pack but after comparing prices it was not worth the time and effort. The members of my woodworking club have reported that rebuilt battery packs are not a good investment as they don't perform well. I was glad to see this battery in the sealed Makita bubble. There are a lot of aftermarket batteries out there but I was real happy with the performance of this unit. Amazon price way beats the local big box retailer that I use for lumber.

The Makita is a good drill with a chuck that does a good job even with small twist drill bits. The LED is quite useful and I would not buy a drill without this feature. Battery charge times fro full sized batteries is about average and on par with Hitachi and Milwaukee lithium-ion drills I have. The highest drill speed is 1500 RPM which is on the low side for drills like this with Milwaukee and DeWalt models providing 2000 RPMs which is great for drilling in metal.

Power is very good but with even moderately difficult drilling tasks this drill bogs down and power cuts off to the battery. This may be due to some kind of preventative feature to keep the lithium-ion battery from overheating but it slows the hole cutting operation considerably.

For normal driving of screws or with small drills the Makita BHP452HW works very well. For use with large hole saws in tough materials the Makita is much slower than the Milwaukee 2611 or DeWalt DCD970 drills. We were drilling a series of holes in stucco to blow in insulation using a Blue Boar TCT Stucco-Brick hole cutter (excellent tool by the way), and the DCD970 worked the best as we could set its 3-speed gear box to the best range for the job. The Milwaukee 2611 was also very good but limited a little by its 2-speed gear box. The Makita drill was taking 2-3 times as long and it seemed like they would power down and then start going again repeatedly and you could see the LED lights go off and on and off again as power was cut to the motor.

With cordless drills having the correct power range available makes a big difference in how effective the drills are at delivering the power to the drill or hole saw. It helps a lot to use one of the new hole cutters with the large side slots like the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters and to use the best gear setting. I was surprised to find that with a very large 6" hole cutter the best performance was from using the middle gear setting of the DeWalt drill but with the Makita drill this is not an option.

The manufacturers' recommendations are really a starting point. The recommendation of the low speed high torque setting for hole saws really works for sizes up to about 3" and for adjustable hole cutters like the Hole Pro X-230 when cutting 9" holes in plywood but a middle range as with the DeWalt DCD970 makes for smoother cutting with very large hole saws like the Blue Boar 6" TCT carbide hole cutter. We find that to get the most out of the Makita or any cordless drill that it pays to get the new style of hole cutters (like the Blue Boar) and the new auger bits to get maximum performance. The difference between the Blue Boar TCT and a Lenox hole saw with the Makita is hard to appreciate but a hole that I can make with the Blue Boar and the Makita BHP452 drill in 4 seconds takes 40 seconds with a brand new Lenox bi-metal hole saw. With a bi-metal hole saw the performance of the Makita is marginal and much worse than a corded drill but with a new high performance type of hole cutter a cordless drill can easily take the place of a 15 amp corded stud drill.

I purchased this drill to replace an 8 year old 14v Dewalt. First thing you notice is the light weight of the drill and how comfortable it is to hold with a nice weight balance. I know most of the lithium-ion tools are lighter now but this just feels the best. Battery lasts forever and I actually used the drill at least 4 or 5 times with the charge it shipped with! Also, the charger is excellent and charges very quickly.

Only two small complaints now. The case seems "cheaper" than the old Dewalt case, and I wish this drill came with the small belt hook. Other than that I am very pleased and would highly recommend to others.

We normally buy Dewalt cordless tools, but when we find deals, we will buy other brands and we figured we'd give the Makita's a try.

The pluses: these batteries do last longer between charges than the old Dewalts nicads we had. If we have 2 guys doing the same job, the Dewalt would lose its charge in 3 hours, while the Makita would last at least 3.5 hours doing the same job.

The downside...the batteries cost you more in the long run. They aren't cheap, and they do last longer between charges, but we seem to have to buy new replacement Makita batteries more often than we do for our Dewalt products.

So, these batteries are great in that they are probably the longest running 18v cordless batteries we have had for our tools, but in the long run we probably won't stick with them because they need to be replaced every 4-6 months (we use them everyday), while our 'other' branded batteries are lasting almost a year under the same workload.

I have owned this set, driller, driver and flashlight for two years. I have owned several cordless drills in the past, but this one is by far the best. First, the battery maintains its charge better than any other I have encountered. The tool doesn't weaken until the battery is virtually fully discharged. The battery charges rapidly; less than 30 minutes. Second, the tools are extremely well balanced, better than any drill or driver I have used. Third, they are very powerful, always able to drill or driver whatever I throw at them. In the 2+ years they have been durable. Fourth, they are smooth running and ergonomically designed. Nice touches like the LED light on the drill make drill in tight, poorly lighted places easier. The keyless chuck on the drill grips very well and doesn't loosen. The flash light is a worth while addition. It lasts long, lights very well and with an adjustable angle makes working under sinks and in other dark places easier. After two years of ownership, I enthusiastically recommend these tools.

After 10 + years of trusted service from my 1ST MAKITA cordless Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable ML902 flashlight and 2 drills, the batteries became "tired", recharged poorly and had little power. I fortunately blessed myself with the 3 piece MAKITA 18-Volt,. Lithium-Ion Combo kit - Wow! Now, a full recharge time is 30 minutes, the power is superb - and by using the Impact Driver even the largest of wood screws is effortless, but I still soap them per my Father, Ralph). Though the handle design differs, it is now even better by being standing upright; and the belt clip is clever. The only change I'd make is to have the chuck accept a key to tighten larger drills bits. The price for the new 3 piece Combo Kit was almost unbelievable - and shipping within the week allowed Jennifer and I to install the High Tech Power Pet electronic cat door for the 4 cats (Tiger, Sebastian, Creamer, & Missy) the next day to keep out raccoons (Procyon lotor). This will be my favored Christmas present. Thomas Edison would be proud of Makita Cordless.

Couple important points:

#1 - The drill and the driver both now come with the belt clips found on the more expensive line, that was a nice surprise.

#2 - The light does not have the ability to mount a belt clip to it. This is by no means a deal breaker but would be a very handy option for a few situations.

Not much else to add to all the other glowing reviews. I borrowed the impact driver on a job, fell in love and decided to get the set.

I just finished putting 100 3-3/4'' Tapcons in cement, and though I used my electric hammer drill to drill the holes, ( this Makita is not a hammer drill ) I used the little cordless Makita hammer driver to drive the tapcons in. It worked just fine.

Downside is that the battery time is relatively short and the battery really needs to be kept well charged to work - meaning as soon as you start to lose power, you need to swap the battery. Though the recharge is quick, it is inconvenient swapping batteries every 20- 30 minutes if you are giving it constant or prolonged use.

For me, the positives...comfort, hammer driver and good power capability outweigh the so- so battery life. I have heard there is a battery available with longer life and I will definitely be looking into that.

UPDATED edit by me...This kit comes with two 18V 1.8AH batteries. Like I said they work great but wear down quick if under constant use. If you need better run time the search terms for the EXTRA 3.0 AH batteries you need to buy is below ...at the time I am editing this they are $130 a pair, so bear that in mind. They are also a bit larger, thus heavier. If you need the extra power I'd see if this kit is offered with the 3.0 batteries at the outset.
