About Makita's 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series

As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V compact lithium-ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.

Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and 16 firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V compact lithium-ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V compact lithium-ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

"The best cordless drill out there" 2010-01-16

By BGBR (Minneapolis, MN USA)

I had read a number of reviews (both on Amazon and in other publications) pretty unanimously declaring this to be the best cordless drill out there. I was a little concerned about the relatively small battery capacity - it has around half the amp-hour rating of most competitors. However, I have found that this is actually an advantage, as it allows for a battery which is smaller, lighter, and which can be charged very quickly. So far, the battery life has been excellent, and the battery really does charge in 15 minutes or less. While you're using one battery the other one is charging, so by the time the first battery runs down, the second one is ready to go. Torque and speed control are excellent, and I really like the fact that the end of the chuck is metal (many drills have a rubber chuck head which often gets abraded during use). A really fantastic drill.

"Awsome drill but batteries fail quickly." 2010-01-14

By C. Shepard (San Diego, CA)

Awesome drill. The battery usage time, recharge, and power is great too. Problem is the batteries won't last long. My first battery failed with TWO WEEKS. I never got around to replacing it, so I'm out of luck. Figured I had one good one. After two years, the second battery failed. So consider this drill's batteries DISPOSABLE. Look at reviews for BL1815 battery to see what I mean.

I called Makita hoping they would give me the model number of a replacement battery that works better (I was willing to purchase...just wanted better quality), and their unfriendly response was they don't have an issue, which surprised me. I figured after two years they would have worked the bugs out, and I thought they were a more reliable, consumer-oriented company. Anyone out there have recommendations on equal quality drill but better quality batteries...or do all Li-ION batteries have short shelf lives?

"Get a 12 volt if light weight is important - other brand 18v for power" 2010-01-12

By Peter Mitchell

This is first lithium-ion powered cordless drills that I bought in converting from using NiCad cordless drills. The lighter weight and faster charge time (with the half-size battery) and LED were all features I initially thought were important. But after a couple years of use I no longer reach for the Makita BDF452HW drill as it lacks the power of comparable 18 volt lithium-ion drills from DeWalt and Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee 2601 18v drill weighs about the same as the Makita but has a better chuck, better charger, much better storage case, and more actual power, regardless of the manufacturers' claims. The manufacturers as a whole seem to report the peak torque which is not important. It is how much torque can be delivered until the screw is all the way into the timber or until the hole saw has cut all the way through a board that is important. Many drills, like this Makita BFD452HW simply cut off power to the motor to keep the lithium-ion cells from overheating and catching fire or worse.

I often have to make large holes up to 6-1/4 inches in diameter in tough materials like plywood and OSB flooring or Hardie siding over plywood sheathing on houses and in the past I used hole saws and a big stud drill like the Milwaukee Hawg monster. With the modern big gullet hole cutters like the ones from Blue Boar and Milwaukee and Bosch, I can use a 18 volt cordless drill instead of the Hawg drill and cut the holes faster than when I was using ordinary hole saws.

BLUE BOAR 5" (127mm) Self-Feed TCT 2-1/4" deep multipurpose Tungsten Carbide hole cutter outperforms self-feed bits & bi-metal hole saws. Cut wood, MDF, OSB, laminates, Hardie & chipboard, plaster, drywall, brick, Formica, non ferrous materials

Being able to cut holes in seconds greatly improves battery life but it also tests the drill torque actually delivered. With the Makita BDF452 the drill stalls repeatedly in situations where the DeWalt DCD and Milwaukee M18 drills power through with no problems at all. It is subtle but the Makita loses power then get power back again and then loses power again and this cycle ends up more than doubling the amount of time it takes to make the hole.

For light duty screw driving and drill applications I prefer to use the Bosch 12 volt drivers and for normal duty where I don't need the hammer action, I use the lightweight but powerful Milwaukee 2601 18v cordless drill, and for heavy duty applications I grab the Dewalt DCD with its 3 speed gearbox. The DeWalt lithium-ion batteries charge in a third the time required for the full size Makita batteries which I also like as I can get by with a single spare.

The Makita case is good but does not provide space for drill bits or adapters. It is neither the best nor the worst designed case.

One aspect of the Makita drill that also is true some of the Milwaukee drills is that the packaging shows a bit holder and a belt clip but these items are not actually included in the kit and need to be special ordered from Makita for an additional $30 with all the order processing, handling, and shipping charges. Difficult to understand why they show these items on the drill on the box but leave them out of the kits. Nice to see that Milwaukee (with the 2601 anyway, but not the more expensive 2611) and Hitachi include these items with their drills.

Oddly the more powerful drills from DeWalt and Ridgid have 3 or 4 speed gearboxes and the less powerful drills have 1 or 2 speed gearboxes. So with the less powerful drill there are fewer choices to balance the load against the gear setting or the reverse of what is needed. This keeps the cost down for the cheaper and less powerful drills but it works against the people using them. Often the middle range is the one that is best suited for heavy drilling with large hole cutters, better than the lowest speed setting where with the lower RPM's the drill is more likely to stall.

Which is why I rated this drill at two stars. For light duty situations the 12 volt drills are more compact and easier to use and for normal tasks the Milwaukee 2601 is a better drill, and for anyone who plans on heavy drilling the DeWalt with the 3-speed gearbox is the best I have used. Whichever drill you use it is good to understand that cordless drills are not a perfect replacement for a drill with a cord with unlimited power from the outlet. Best performance from a modern lithium-ion cordless drill comes from using it differently and upgrading the hole cutters used at the same time. Upgrading the hole cutters used is a good first step as you may find your old cordless drill works great with the new hole cutters.

 "Great drill" 2010-01-09

By L. Marek

I bought this drill for my son for Christmas. He's gone through several cordless drills, and this one is by far the highest quality drill he's ever owned and he was delighted about getting it. It is all that it is advertised to be.
